Design for serious situations

Children Cancer Foundation

06.07.2025

The CCF Children Cancer Foundation helps children and young people with cancer and their families by providing direct financial support. Even in affluent countries, the need is greater than many people realise. This is because a childhood cancer diagnosis requires immediate treatment and the huge costs — and underestimated follow-up costs — are only partially covered by insurance.

Our mission: to give the foundation, which has been operating successfully and quietly for almost 30 years, a face that does justice to its commitment. So that it remains fit in an ever more rapidly changing social environment.

When developing the overall brand identity, we quickly realised that any design reminiscent of medical or therapeutic services, which the foundation does not offer, was out of the question. The typical visual codes for children’s themes were also ruled out. Because the CCF is not a hospital clown, but an experienced and well-connected logistician who effectively relieves families and thus also makes them feel emotionally better.

The joint choice fell on a logo that deliberately breaks with the conventions of the category. The letters CCF look like a mix of stencil and paper cut-out. And they stand out against a colour gradient that looks like spray paint. It is less about an explanatory narrative than about the spontaneous feeling that this unique look triggers: showing determination with a “clear edge”, while at the same time visual lightness creates a feeling of relief and confidence.

In essence, the logo already embodies everything we want to express with the childrencancer.eu website. Unbureaucratic, targeted help, but also understanding and compassion.

This can only be realised with a low-threshold approach. In terms of language and even more so in terms of the options for applying for financial support. There are three to choose from: via online form, PDF upload or in the traditional way by post.

A separate section is dedicated to the “Golfing with Heart” charity tournaments and the next step will be to adapt the existing website of the same name to the new overarching appearance of the CCF Children Cancer Foundation.
